Chapter Six

"Melody is investigating Alice's death."

Great! She'd been silent the whole walk home. Although, she'd clearly had something on her mind. I guessed now I knew what.

"Good for you, Melody," Dad called from the kitchen.

Mum shot me a glare that could wilt a houseplant and stomped off to, presumably, give him a piece of her mind. I followed, trying to keep the smile from my face.

"Hello, Benji, my boo-boo," I said, crouching low and giving my doggo sibling a big cuddle.

"Tell her," Mum said.

"Tell her what?" Dad shrugged and winked at me behind Mum's back.

Mum grabbed the kettle with a vengeance, filled it to the brim before flicking it on, and then grabbing mugs from the cupboard and slamming them on the countertop with clatter. "That it's not safe to get involved."

"Melody. It's not safe to get involved," Dad said, earning him a low growl from Mum and another slam, this time of the cupboard door as she retrieved the teabags.

"I do not find this funny."

I sighed, gave Benji one last scritch behind the ear, and stood. "I just want to know what happened to Alice."

"You're a photographer, Melody. It's not your job to know. It's the job of the police. I'm sure they have everything in hand."

"I'm sure they do." I took the tea caddy from her hand and popped a few into the teapot, adding the boiling water. Who knew what might happen if Mum decided to slam it down.

"I blame you for this," Mum said, pointing at Dad. "She's far too curious for her own good, and she gets that from you."

"Me. You're the historian."

"I get it from both of you," I said, interjecting. "As well as my analytical and practical skills; my love of art, nature, and the outdoors; and my appreciation of beauty and detail. The best parts of me are because of the two of you, and that's why I want to make sure Alice's killer is found."

"There you go again, saying she was murdered when you don't know that for sure."

Dad took a step toward the fridge, seeming as if he wanted a little distance between him and Mum before saying, "Actually, it's been on the news. They're looking for a killer and asking for anyone who might have witnessed anything or has footage of her concert to come forward."

"That settles it, Melody. You can absolutely not hunt down a murderer. It's not safe."

I glanced from Mum to Dad and grumbled while running my hand over my head. "I didn't want to say anything but I've kind of done it before." Before they had the chance to ask any questions, I told them all about Harry being a suspect in Florida, and then about the business in the Masai Mara. “Harry said it’s like I have a sixth sense for these type of things.”

Mum's face got even more apoplectic. She threw her hand up in exasperation. “You have a sixth sense for trouble, more like!”

"See, this is why I didn't want to tell you.
